Alumni and Friends of VMI:

Cyber Corps Numbers: 417

Sorry I didn't get a chance to send out an update last week. I was travelling a bit. And, quite frankly, there wasn't much going on.

Rats on the Rampage: Seems this year's current crop of rats had themselves a step off recently. Seems the rats (no doubt encouraged by the upper classes) decided to take the chairs out of the mess hall and spell out "98" at the 50 yard line on the football field. Things went a bit awry as the rats were challenged by the post police and ended up trashing "Crozet" by breaking some furniture and crockery. The Washington Post reports that the damage came to about $7,600...an amount each of the rats will have to pay on a pro rate (about $18 apiece) basis.

The rats were subsequently herded in JM Hall and read the riot act by the Supe and the Dean. They then had a little midnight exercise under the direction of the first class and then went back to clean up the mess in Crozet.

The next day the rats were directed to go to class in BDU trousers, gym dyke shirt and sweat dyke top as they were not worthy of wearing a real VMI uniform. However, it dawned on the first class that this attire was probably too comfortable. So...they're required to wear grey blouse and straight pants to class until Thanksgiving. Ah those rats.

VMI Football: VMI lost to East Tennessee State today by a score of 17 - 7. So I guess that makes them 0 - 11 for the season.

A recent Roanoke Times article indicated that some notions about the current study are just plain wrong. For example, the article states that VMI will not be dropping to Division III as the program has enough trouble attracting with scholarships, much less without them. The article also discusses the possibility of VMI playing in a different I-AA conference. It speculates that since Boston U recently left the Atlantic 10 Conference ( the old Yankee Conference) that VMI may want to play there. This conference includes such schools as Richmond, James Madison and William and Mary. This might cause of couple problems, however. Specifically, travel would be more expensive and a football affiliation with the Atlantic 10 might leave the other 12 VMI sports without a home. Again, stay tuned.

VMI Basketball: The Runnin' Roos started off their season with an 88 - 70 loss to Wake Forest. But hey, I consider that score a moral victory. Next game is Nov 18 with Elon coming to Cameron Hall.

Looking for Alums in Florida: I recently received an e-mail from Mark George '85. He's interested in locating some alums in the Fort Pierce/Verona Beach area in Florida. He says he'd like to at least get an unofficial chapter started in that area. His e-mail address is: MAGeorg85@aol.com. His other address is:

Start Your Holiday Shopping: I recently received a letter from a gentleman by the name of Henry E. Kidd. He informs me that the Alumni Association has agreed to use his newest limited edition print, Legends of Valor, as a fund raiser. This print is a depiction of the VMI Cadets at New Market. You can request a post card depicting the print by calling the following toll-free number: 1-800-423-2237. His address is: Kidd Historic Gallery, 100 Waterfront Drive, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. He says that he can get the prints mailed out 2 or 3 days after the order is received. Looks like the prints range from $80 - 130.

That's it for this week. Appears the hoidays are upon us. Have a great Thanksgiving.

Yours in the Spirit,
RB Lane '75
