Award Honoring Jonathan Daniels '61: "One of the most heroic deeds of which I have heard in my entire ministry and career was performed by Jonathan Daniels '61"
- the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Chuck Steenburgh from the VMI Public Information Office informs me that NPR will air a piece tomorrow on Jonathan Daniels and the establishment of an award at VMI in his honor. This piece will be aired on All Things Considered (check your local listings for the time).

If you remember, the Fall 1997 Alumni Review (pp. 104-105) contained an article on Jonathan and how he stepped into the line of fire to save the life of Rub Sales, a black teenager.

VMI Basketball: VMI defeated Wofford this week. I received an e-mail from one of our participants who attended the game. He indicated that this team is exciting and plays a "run and gun" type game. If you get a chance to watch the Keydets in action, ya' need to cease the opportunity. Also, and according to my schedule, the Keydets take on Army tomorrow up at West Point, NY.

VMI Seniors Suspended: The following AP article briefly describes the circumstances surrrounding the suspension of three VMI first classmen.

VMI Seniors Suspended Over Spanking

LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) - Three Virginia Military Institute seniors have been suspended for spanking six male freshmen during their initiation rituals.

The freshmen were wearing pants when they were struck on the buttocks with a belt and a coat hangar on several occasions in October, the school said Thursday.

``This was horseplay and roughhousing that went too far,'' VMI spokesman Chuck Steenburgh said. ``It was like when someone gets a birthday spank. They weren't trying to punish anybody.''

The three upperclassmen suspended Wednesday will be eligible to graduate after summer school or after applying for readmission this fall.

None of the women in VMI's first co-ed class at VMI were involved.

Thirty women enrolled in August, ending the school's 158-year, all-male tradition.

Name Change?: A received a couple e-mails from participants indicating that there's a bill before the Virginia General Assembly to change VMI's name to Virginia Military Academy effective July 1, 2000. Seems it is House Bill (HB) 1329. You can check out the following site for more details: http://legis.state.va.us/. Bill is being sponsored by Robert G. Marshall, Manassas, VA. If you want to voice your opinion about this bill, call the General Assembly at 1-800-889-0229. When you call, give them the bill number, your name and address and whether or not you support the bill.

That's it for this week.

Yours in the Spirit,
RB Lane '75
